Tip Calculator

Calculate tip amount, total, and split per person.

Formula and method

This calculator uses the values you enter and applies the calculation immediately in your browser. The main output formulas are:

  • Tip amount: bill * tip / 100
  • Total: bill * (1 + tip/100)
  • Per person: bill * (1 + tip/100) / people

Some formulas are undefined for certain input combinations, such as division by zero, equal x-values in a slope calculation, or logarithms of non-positive numbers. In those cases the live tool reports that the result is undefined instead of displaying Infinity or NaN.

Examples

  • Example: with Bill = 64.5 $, Tip = 20 %, People = 2, this calculator returns Tip amount = 12.9 $, Total = 77.4 $, Per person = 38.7 $.

Tipping on the pre-tax or post-tax amount

Tipping norms generally suggest calculating on the pre-tax subtotal, not the total after tax is added -- tax isn't a service the server provided, so tipping on it slightly overpays relative to the norm (though it's a small difference in absolute terms). If your bill only shows a post-tax total, subtract the tax line first for a more standard calculation, or don't worry about the few extra cents either way.
